Danai Gurira was looking forward to one thing when she started her new gig: playing with knives. The rising star was attracted to her latest character, Michonne on AMC’s hit series, The Walking Dead, because of her supreme survival skills, which include wielding a samurai sword. Still, the actress and playwright says her connection to the role is deeper than its cool factor.
“Her story was compelling,” says the 34-year-old. “One of my plays, Eclipsed, was about women in war in Liberia. Michonne reminded me of that sort of woman, one who’s taken on her own way of getting through a dire situation and become rather formidable.”
